THRIVE Festival alongside Open House Melbourne present an in-conversation event with artist Ryan New. presented by temperance hall,
and supported by rawcus.
Join us for an in-conversation event with performer and contemporary dancer Ryan New, to explore the nature of his performance practice in relation to challenges and expectation as an artist with disability, centred around Ryan’s recent collaboration of SICK with Phillip Adams Director of BalletLab.
SICK is an interdisciplinary performance that critiques acceptance and challenges expectations of artists with disability. Ryan will discuss his experiences of personal discovery and choreographic process working on SICK with Phillip Adams and visual artist Jake Preval.
A work like SICK breathes in the surrealist fantasies that childhood can suggest. SICK reveals an aesthetic of surface frivolity that incorporates Baroque and Renaissance references; it is blitzed with personal quirks, dark humour, cinematic dreams, social commentary and dysfunction of self-identity.
Ryan’s presentation will include video highlights of SICK in development, followed by a Q&A moderated by Kate Sulan, Artistic Director of Rawcus.
